Software

Posted on | September 24, 2008 |

Despite the leviathan scale of software to be found the world over, for a smaller business’s needs there are two types. One is specialist practice software and the other are general applications. The specialist applications go towards running the specific systems and functions of the business. If you are an accounting firm you use bookkeeping software. If you are an apiarist company you use beekeeping software. Any given company also needs the services of general applications like word processors, web browsers, email, and spreadsheets.

It doesn’t matter which of the two types of software you are looking for, most of the principles are the same. The most important consideration is the training and implementation of the software. If you had the choice between the wrong software that was implemented properly, and the right software that was implemented improperly, choose the former. The right software doesn’t do anyone any good if the employees don’t know how to use it properly. Naturally, this means that when choosing the software to meet your businesses needs you need to make sure that you have a plan for putting it in the hands of your employees beyond “hey, install this.”

It is important, especially in the case of specialist software, to make sure that the provider is tenacious in it’s continuing support and updating ethics. You need to know that their maintenance will continue beyond just version 1.0.

Also, when evaluating software, don’t neglect contacting other users of the software, particularly those that use the software in a similar way to you, or do similar business.

As the ways businesses use the internet evolve, so do the software choices. For a smaller business, looking to an online solution rather than investing in a complex and expensive IT infrastructure could be the answer, especially if it allows the user to access the software anywhere that the internet is available. This also allows businesses to share information within their own organization or with clients. The drawback to this is that your business’s information and secrets are left to the security of the internet. It also means that anytime your business wants to run the software, it may be subject to availability.

Beyond the internet software, the open-source revolution has created surprising results in terms of options. Keep in mind though that open-source typically has initial familiarity and compatibility issues.

Whichever solution you choose, remember again that the plan for implementation of the software and a clear idea of what your business wants to achieve is vital to its success. And you better shop around.
