Life in the Outdoors

Posted on | September 23, 2008 |

No matter where you live, chances are there is somewhere where you can get away from it all within a few hours. But what sort of things can you do outdoors?
Depending on where you live, you have several different options in taking advantage of the outdoor recreation. The most important thing to remember is that this is outdoor recreation. Have fun with it. Take off your tie or high heels. Forget about meetings or work pressures. Really enjoy the time that you’re spending outside. Don’t like camping? Stay in a motel or cabin. Feel awkward on a bike? Walk, hike, or jog.
But what can you do, really? If you have a river nearby, there’s a good chance that there are guides to take you river rafting or kayaking. If you have a lake, consider boating, swimming, or waterskiing. If you have canyons or mountains, go hiking or running, or take a picnic. Maybe you know someone you can go rock-climbing with?
Whatever you do, if you are trying something for the first time, have either a guide or a friend who knows what they’re doing come with you. This is essential. The experience is significantly more enjoyable when you can a) share the experience with someone, b) have some instruction on proper techniques, safety tips, and how to get the most out of what you’re doing, and c) don’t have to wade through a how-to manual or guide, and ultimately miss out on the majesty of nature around you.
Give yourself enough time to enjoy what you are doing. Don’t try and “squeeze” the outdoor recreation activity into your schedule; take a day or two off, or go on a weekend (keeping in mind that weekends and holidays are always significantly more crowded than weekdays).
