Emergency Preparation

Posted on | September 23, 2008 |

If a person really wants to get serious about emergency preparation, he/she needs to consider getting an emergency generator. It should be something to consider seriously, not just in the event that we come to reflect a mad max movie or are infested by zombies, but even a strong wind or a lot of rain could leave you without power for several days or weeks. When that happens, say goodbye to your refrigerated and frozen goods, using the computer or most phones, or having hot water.

Before you consider just going out and getting a gas-powered generator because they tend to be cheaper, consider this: where would you possibly keep the gas needed to run the generator for a week or more? Also, gasoline expires after some time and needs to be replaced regularly. During an extended power outage, gas could be scarce.

A good generator could be a propane-power generator, especially if you have an in ground tank. If not consider that as well (this is your future survival after all). The smallest generator that will probably meet your basic requirements is a 7000 watt generator. They’re installed outside the home and come on automatically in the even of power-failure. You’ll thank yourself later.

Another important element for emergency preparation is having a 72 hour kit. That should be at the core of your preparation. From there, work to get a good year’s worth of food and necessary supplies for each person in your household. If you’re daunted by the very task of amassing that much food and stuffs, work to have a week’s supply first, then a month, then 3 months etc. If you make sure to buy extras of your food when you go to the grocery store you’ll find that it adds up very quickly.
