Getting Those Domains
Posted on | September 24, 2008 |
Have you ever found yourself wanting to seize the domain of someone else? Maybe it’s a collection of words near and dear to your heart. Or maybe it’s name of the garage band you and your buddies organized to rock out. Whatever it is, you want it and this is how:
There’s more to domains than them just kicking over and dying. If the domain owner doesn’t renew the domain by the expiration date it becomes “expired.” During the following 40 days the domain goes into a gray period where the services shut off, but the owner can still renew at the standard fee. When the 40 days are over, it goes into redemption mode. The owner now has to pay an additional fee to renew the domain. Once this period of time is over the domain will become locked. During the locked period the information on the domain is deleted over approximately 5 days. After that the name is dropped from the ICANN database and becomes available to you. The whole process from expiration date to deletion takes 75 days.
After that period the domain enters the Drop where any group can conceivably pick it up and there are services that can help you to get that in demand domain name. The Drop is a 3 hour no man’s land, where the domain magically just opens up. The services most able to pick these domains up can be costly but are more likely to get the domain. If your interest is only a casual one, go ahead and use a basic service.
